iPhoneography

An interesting article on the rise of a new trend - iPhoneography.

Though I don't agree with the opinion that Hipstamatic and similar apps are necessarily 'wrong' to use at all.

It all depends on the intention of the photo being taken, the composition or the timing of the image.

A poor image is a poor image no matter if it's taken on the best consumer camera in the market, or the lowest quality VGA camera phone in the market -no matter if it has been enhanced via an app, or via Photoshop (or going back further, an analogue photo that was produced and 'edited' in the darkroom).

A photo taken on a Canon 5DMkII, then processed for a certain effect is not necessarily better (or worse) than a photo taken with an iPhone through the Hipstamatic app or a photo that has had an apps' effects or templates applied - bar the print quality/resolution of the image being higher, which may not even be relevant depending on the intended use of the finished product.

A lot of professional photographers will apply a similar effect to their own photos in Photoshop, a 'template' if you will, to create a certain aesthetic quality that they are after.  In this respect, there is no difference to someone using an iPhone app to edit their photo.  There are many 'templates' out there for Photoshop users to download and use, without the photographer needing to create them, just like there are iPhone apps.

As a last thought, if using an iPhone and app to take a photo is 'wrong', a similar argument could be made that digital (as a whole) is 'wrong', when compared to analogue photography...
